Abstract

Purpose: This study was done to explore essences and meanings of nursing students' nursing care experiences of the unconscious patients.

Methods: Colaizzi phenomenological methodology was applied to analyze data which were collected through in-depth interviews with 10 nursing students between September to October, 2013.

Results: The analysis produced eight themes ¡®hope being hidden in a deep silence,' 'feeling cramped from patient being uncommunicable', 'difficulty to assess patient's status of perception and cognition', 'implementing more direct nursing care', 'having nursing students' patient range widened', 'willing to provide caring', 'being able to tolerate unconscious patient', 'looking ICU nurse revered'.

Conclusion: After taking care of the unconscious patients, the participants realized that nursing is knowledge-based professional, values lives and provides a prestigious nursing care. The findings suggested that clinical nursing practice manual needs to include actual health assesment, rationals, concrete nursing knowledge, therapeutic circumstances for the unconscious patient care and strategies for reading their nonverbal communication. Further studies such as developing teaching methods on how to enhance perceptions, cognition assessment and promote care of the unconscious patient care are recommended.
